The short answer

Pick ProBackup if you need records put back into Airtable for you, a SOC 2 Type II report, SSO, or one tool that also backs up Asana, Notion, Jira and other apps. Pick Nightclerk if what you need most is an email each morning saying what changed and an alert when records vanish, with read-only access, at $10 a month for 10 bases. ProBackup starts at $31 a month ($25 billed yearly), and its deletion alerts are on Pro, at $47.

Where ProBackup is the better choice

  • You want restores done for you. ProBackup can recreate deleted records or overwrite selected fields on existing ones, with comments and files, on every plan. With Nightclerk you download a CSV of the old rows and import it yourself.
  • Someone needs a SOC 2 report. ProBackup says it is SOC 2 Type II certified and offers a DPA. Its Premium plan adds SSO, audit reports and a virus scanner. We don't have SOC 2 yet.
  • You keep comments in Airtable. ProBackup copies record comments; we don't yet.
  • Airtable is one of several apps. ProBackup covers 21, so one vendor and one bill can cover Notion, Jira or HubSpot as well.
  • You need data held in a particular region. ProBackup stores backups in one of 9 AWS regions, including the EU, UK, Canada and Australia; the nearest is preselected and support can change it. Our data is in AWS us-east-1.
  • You want history kept with no end date. Premium keeps versions with no limit. Our longest is 3 years, on Vault.

Where Nightclerk is the better choice

  • You want a daily list of what changed, not a weekly summary. Our receipt (email, and Slack if you like) names the records added, edited and deleted in each base after every backup. ProBackup's status email is weekly, on Pro and above.
  • You want deletion alerts on a small budget. Our alerts are on Keeper at $10 a month: 10 or more records vanishing at once, one field emptied or overwritten across much of a table, or an import of 25+ records that grows a table by half. ProBackup's alerts start on Pro at $47.
  • You don't want any tool able to write to your base. We ask only for read access and never write. That rules out one-click restore, and with a read-only token, nothing on our side can change your data.
  • You only need Airtable, and only a few bases. Free covers 1 base weekly with no time limit, and Keeper covers 10 daily for $10.

Switching or running both

Nightclerk is read-only, so it can run next to ProBackup on the same bases without either one getting in the other's way. A common split is ProBackup for restores and the apps besides Airtable, Nightclerk for the daily receipt and the cheaper alerts. Two daily backups double the API calls a base uses, which only matters in a Free Airtable workspace (1,000 calls a month).

If you move from ProBackup to Nightclerk, keep your ProBackup history until ours covers as far back as you need, or export what you want to keep first; we can't import another tool's backups. To see what our copy of a base looks like before signing up, run the free one-time export or read how to back up Airtable.

Questions

Is there a cheaper alternative to ProBackup?

ProBackup's lowest plan is Plus at $31 a month, or $25 a month billed yearly, with 10 GB of storage and a 7-day trial. Nightclerk's Keeper plan is $10 a month for 10 bases backed up daily, and its Free plan backs up 1 base weekly. The trade-off is that Nightclerk never writes to Airtable, so it doesn't restore records for you the way ProBackup does.

Does ProBackup restore into Airtable?

Yes. ProBackup says every plan includes granular restore: it can create new records, or overwrite selected fields on existing records, and comments and files come back with a record.

Is ProBackup SOC 2 certified?

ProBackup says it is SOC 2 Type II certified. It states this for the company and doesn't say which plans it covers. Nightclerk doesn't have a SOC 2 report yet.

Does ProBackup alert you when records are deleted?

ProBackup's Pro and Premium plans include alerts for mass deletions and unusual activity, with custom thresholds; it doesn't publish a default. Plus doesn't include them. Nightclerk's paid plans alert when 10 or more records vanish at once, or 5 that are 5% of a table.

Can I use Nightclerk and ProBackup on the same bases?

Yes. Nightclerk only reads, with its own token, so it doesn't touch what ProBackup does. Each tool uses Airtable API calls, which matters on Free workspaces (1,000 calls a month) more than on Team (100,000).
