NightclerkNightclerk
Every night, a copy. Every morning, a receipt.
Nightclerk is the dependable person on the night shift. They copy your Airtable bases while you sleep, and by morning there's a short receipt on your desk: what came in, what changed, what went missing. If something big goes missing, they don't wait for morning.
Kept
Records, ledgers, receipts. Things that last, nothing that looks gone by next year.
Plain
Names the actual records. Numbers in a typewriter face so they line up.
Calm
The light is on and someone’s watching. Alarm only when something is wrong.
01
Logo
A receipt: a dark slip with a torn edge, two ledger lines and the night clerk's moon in lamp amber. The wordmark is Newsreader at optical size 48, weight 560. Keep the moon's width clear on every side.
Don't recolour the moon, put the ink mark on night (use the reversed file), add shadows, rotate it, or set the wordmark in another face.
02
Colour
Paper and ink, with one light on. About 85% paper and white, 12% ink, 2% night, under 1% lamp. Every text colour is at least 4.5:1 on paper-2; ratios below are on paper-2.

Icons and marks
Typographic marks first
+ ~ −
Added, edited, deleted. They carry most of the meaning.
1.5px line icons, 20px grid
Only where a word can't do it. Never emoji, filled sets or icons in coloured circles.
Stamps and status dots
Uppercase mono in a hairline border, like a rubber stamp. The dot is the only filled icon.

- Receipts: white slips on the paper desk, one soft low shadow. The torn edge is for marketing receipts only, never app cards.
- Ledger rules: hairlines between rows, figures right-aligned in mono, mono eyebrows labelling each column.
- Night: closing sections and reversed panels, where the lamp can glow once.
- One ground: pages sit on paper with hairline rules between sections, not alternating coloured bands. Corners stay small: 4px on slips, 6–8px on cards, fields and buttons.
- Real data, not illustrations: every product image is the product rendering demo data through the real engine. No stock art, people illustrations, 3D, blobs, gradients or glass.

Components
Buttons: ink, paper, quiet
One ink button per view. 7–8px corners, a 1px press, no gradients or glows. On night, the button is paper.
Tabs and toggles: a 2px rule, not a pill
Counts sit beside the label in mono, not in a bubble.
Fields
Hairline border, ink on focus with a brass ring. 44px tall on phones.

Hairlines between rows, an ink rule on top, figures right-aligned in mono. Zeros go quiet.
07
Motion
Paper, not jelly. Things rise 6px and fade in over 420ms; lists print one row every 40ms, like the receipt above. Hover and press changes take 150ms; buttons press down a pixel. No bounce, no spring overshoot, no full-page spinners. Reduced-motion settings turn all of it into instant changes.
08
Voice
The person who kept the books overnight: plain, specific, calm. Short sentences, one idea each.
We say
We don't
“15 records left Content since yesterday. They’re still in Airtable’s trash for 7 days.”
“Critical data loss event detected!”
“‘Spring roundup’ was deleted from Content.”
“1 record was removed.”
“We never ask for write access.”
“Bank-grade, military-level security.”
“This didn’t work. It’s on our side, not yours.”
“Oops! Something went wrong.”
Say what we don’t do: comments, automations, attachment files today.
“The only”, “the first”, “the best”, or quotes from customers we don’t have.
Words we use: copy, backup, receipt, deleted, changed, kept, morning, outside Airtable, read-only. Words we avoid: seamless, robust, powerful, supercharge, AI-powered, revolutionary, and any exclamation mark outside a real emergency.
